Biostatistics is the branch of public health that applies statistical methods to biological and health data: designing clinical trials and population surveys, building the disease-surveillance and life-table methods epidemiology depends on, and testing whether a pattern seen in health data reflects a real effect rather than chance. It is counted, alongside epidemiology, environmental health, health policy and management, and the social and behavioral sciences, among the traditional core disciplines of public health, and its methods, drawn originally from work on heredity and agricultural experiments by figures such as Karl Pearson and Ronald Fisher, now underpin the quantitative reasoning the whole field of public health uses to move from raw counts to a defensible finding.
