Implementation science is the scientific study of methods to promote the systematic uptake of research findings and evidence-based practices into routine health policy and practice, addressing the gap between what research shows works and what is actually delivered in health systems and communities.

Once an intervention is shown to work, what methods and strategies actually get it adopted, delivered with fidelity and sustained in routine practice and policy, and why does research evidence reach some settings and not others? 1

Key Debate

The field was founded partly as a response to implementation findings being scattered across many separate disciplinary journals with little room for the contextual and process detail later adopters need to reproduce a result; whether implementation science is a distinct discipline with its own theory or an applied, cross-disciplinary practice remains debated among its own practitioners. 1
