A British physician who became an epidemiologist in the mid-20th century. With Austin Bradford Hill, he studied lung cancer patients in twenty London hospitals in 1950 and found that the risk of developing the disease rose with the amount smoked. The British Doctors Study, which the two of them began the following year, confirmed the finding in 1954 and helped establish cigarette smoking as a cause of lung cancer.
