Thomas McKeown

A British physician and historian of medicine who argued, in what became known as the McKeown thesis, that the mortality decline in industrializing Britain owed more to rising living standards and nutrition than to medical intervention or sanitation reform specifically. The thesis remains debated among public health historians, who credit sanitation and medicine a larger share than McKeown's original argument allowed.
