The Office of the Surgeon General is the operational head of the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and a leading spokesperson on public health for the federal government. Its predecessor position, Supervising Surgeon of the Marine Hospital Service, was established March 29, 1871; the title was shortened to Surgeon General in 1902.
