The specialized international health agency for the Americas, created in December 1902 as the International Sanitary Bureau after nineteenth century yellow fever epidemics spread along maritime trade routes. Its mission is to lead strategic collaborative efforts among member states and other partners to promote equity in health, to combat disease, and to improve the quality of, and lengthen, the lives of the peoples of the Americas. It works from its Washington, D.C. headquarters, 27 country offices and two specialized centers in the region, and its secretariat is the Pan American Sanitary Bureau. In 2022 the organization marked 120 years of public health work in the Americas.
