Germany's national public health institute, responsible for disease control and prevention and subordinate to the Federal Ministry of Health. Founded in 1891 and named for its founding director, the bacteriologist and Nobel laureate Robert Koch, it is headquartered in Berlin with a second site in Wernigerode.
