The Global Burden of Disease Study began in 1990 as a single World Bank-commissioned study quantifying the health effects of more than 100 diseases and injuries across eight world regions, giving estimates of morbidity and mortality by age, sex and region. The 1990 round was institutionalized at the World Health Organization, with the research conducted mainly by researchers at Harvard and the WHO, and it introduced the disability-adjusted life year as a new metric meant to let the cost-effectiveness of very different health interventions be compared on one scale, the metric this atlas's own DALY concept describes.
