WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control

The evidence based treaty adopted by the World Health Organization member states in 2003 to address the tobacco epidemic, in force since 2005. It reaffirms the right of people to the highest standard of health, provides legal dimensions for international health cooperation and sets high standards for compliance. With 183 parties it covers more than 90 percent of the world's population, and its demand reduction provisions are carried into practice by the MPOWER measures, which have been shown to save lives and reduce costs from averted health care expenditure.
