A 2015 systematic review and meta-analysis in Open Heart (BMJ) by Zoe Harcombe and colleagues, examining the randomized controlled trial evidence available when the United States government issued its first dietary fat guidelines in 1977 and again in 1983. The review found that the RCT evidence available at the time did not support the recommendation to reduce total or saturated fat intake.
