A collective term for the four separate, publicly funded healthcare systems of the United Kingdom: the National Health Service in England, NHS Scotland, NHS Wales, and Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland. Launched by Health Minister Aneurin Bevan on 5 July 1948, it was founded on the principle that it should meet everyone's needs, be free at the point of delivery, and be based on clinical need rather than ability to pay.
